Clean Your Refrigerator Day 2020: Maintenance Tips

Clean Your Refrigerator Day 2020 is on November 15th and is a great reminder to clean out your commercial refrigeration equipment to ensure that it is running effectively.

Refrigerators can often be one of the appliances which we take for granted - they are extremely vital in a commercial kitchen. Without them, our food would warm and become spoiled. We only really take much notice of them when they stop working, or a bad smell emerges when the fridge is opened.

So, we have a list of maintenance tips to help keep your fridge stay clean. If you think you need to get more specialist work done, its best to speak to a catering engineers chester.

Always clean both the interior and exterior.

It isn’t a mammoth task to clean the entire refrigerator. Take a soft cloth or brush and slowly make your way across the entire machine. Scrub the shelves, the drain pans, tubes, and all surfaces using an appropriate cleaning solution.

If you have the option to remove the shelves and drawers, do so and soak them for a while. Follow up with rinsing and placing back into the unit. Do this regularly to keep away nasty smells and bacteria.

Schedule regular maintenance checks.

If you regularly get an expert in refrigeration repairs, you can have the peace of mind that any issues will be addressed and sorted out. This means you won’t have any nasty surprises or major repairs to pay for later on.

Prevent mould.

If you neglect your commercial refrigerator, food can come contaminated due to mould and bacteria. You could end up discouraging your customers or violating a number of health codes.

To prevent mould from doing this, be sure to keep an eye out for trapped dirt. A bad smell coming from the fridge could also indicate the presence of mould, so act immediately if you notice this.

Make sure that the door is sealed.

Be mindful that you have properly closed the door once you have been in the refrigerator. If you don’t close it properly, the system may not cool down and keep the food at the correct temperature for proper preservation. Keeping your fridge cold is very important!

Don’t overfill the refrigerator.

You will more than likely want to utilise the space in your refrigerator, and this is fine. However, if you start to cram things in and overfill the space you may end up damaging the refrigerator and cause it to work improperly.

Having too many items on the shelves can put a strain on the motor and condenser oil - resulting in over-operation and a rise in energy bills.

Keep the fridge dry.

Refrigeration does involve moisture, however, this doesn’t mean that you should let any moisture or liquids accumulate in your appliance. An excess in moisture can lead your refrigerator to freeze up over time and end up breaking down. Take a look at the shelves, drawers, and condenser coils every so often for a build-up of liquid.

A fridge which is well maintained will save both your business and customers - so you can’t go wrong with planning proper maintenance.
